YOUTH AND STUDENT ORGANIZING INTERN

BACKGROUND ABOUT U.S. AFRICA INSTITUTE

U.S. Africa Institute is a community of educators, students and citizen diplomats who are committed to address educational inequity, offers cultural exchanges, bring people closer together, and promote peace building from South Central Los Angeles to Africa.

In 2023, we are pursuing change in four specific areas, education and youth programs, peace building, university partnerships, public diplomacy and exchange programs. 
USAI helps foster greater understanding between Americans and Africans, promote peace and democracy, ensure access to education for underserved students, and build capacity and professional excellence in teaching, research, and cross-cultural collaboration utilizing in-person and virtual modalities.

 

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION

Youth and Student Organizing Intern will support the planning, execution, and maintenance of U.S. Africa Institute’s Youth and Education programs. This position will work approximately 8 hours per week from February to August. This position is ideal for individuals excited to work alongside high school, college, and community college student leaders, interested in learning more about advocacy and community organizing tactics, and passionate about the movement for equitable access to education. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

This internship is an opportunity for students to learn while working at an international non-profit organization supporting local to continental Africa programs. The position is ideal for someone who has experience with or is excited to learn more about youth and student mobilizing, community organizing and advocacy, public speaking and facilitating meetings,

  • Strong organizational abilities and organizing skills
  • The ability to engage others, whether one-on-one or in a group
  • Online Organizing — Emailing, Social media, etc.
  • Strong writing and communication skills

Responsibilities include:

  • 5 -10 hours per week commitment
  • Weekly national and international program call
  • Weekly individual priorities call with organizers
  • Attend 2-2 hours of team events per week — work blocks, events, additional briefings/trainings, etc.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION INTERN

DESCRIPTION

 

We are seeking a Marketing and Communications Intern who is a self-starter, detail oriented, and possesses solid graphic design, marketing and communication skills. This is a 10 hour per week, unpaid hybrid position.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Possesses graphic design skills
  • Currently studying marketing, communications, PR, journalism, English, creative writing, or related course
  • Ability to work independently and manage high-detail, deadline-sensitive projects with professional quality
  • Team player attitude, demonstrated by being flexible and responsible as well as being a self-starter
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

 

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the implementation of a comprehensive and strategic communications strategy of USAI including writing blog posts, prepare flyers for monthly programs and events
  • Support U.S. Africa Institute’s marketing and communications team in the execution of marketing, public relations, communications, and social media strategies.
  • Curate and post content on U.S. Africa Institute’s many social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Wikipedia.
  • Engage with followers to encourage conversation and participation in our work, and respond to questions and concerns reactively
  • Develop and refresh collateral and creative content
  • Monitor and measure marketing and communications activities and develop metrics and analytics reports
  • Support the development of internal communications strategy and webinar program
